Geochemical profiles (SO42-, H2S, CH4, δ13CH4) and phylogenetic diversity of Archaea and Bacteria from two oceanographic cruises dedicated to the lobes sediments of the Congo deep-sea fan are presented in this paper. In this area, organic-rich turbidites reach 5000 m and allow the establishment of patchy cold-seep-like habitats including microbial mats, reduced sediments, and vesicomyid bivalves assemblages. These bivalves live in endosymbiosis with sulfur-oxidizing bacteria and use sulfides to perform chemosynthesis. In these habitats, unlike classical abyssal sediments, anoxic processes are dominant. Desulfurobacterium crinifex sp.nov., a novel thermophilic, pinkish-streamer forming, chemolithoautotrophic bacterium isolated from a Juan de Fuca Ridge hydrothermal vent and amendment of the genus Desulfurobacterium ArchiMer

A novel thermophilic, chemolithoautotrophic T bacterium, designated as NE1206(T), was isolated from a Juan de Fuca Ridge hydrothermal vent sample (tubes of the annelid polychaete Paralvinella sulfincola attached to small pieces of hydrothermal chimney). The cells were rod-shaped (1.2-3.5x0.4-0.7 mum), occurring as single motile rods or forming macroscopic aggregates visible as pinkish to brownish streamers. The new isolate was anaerobic. The edifice walls of the Eiffel Tower hydrothermal vent site (Mid-Atlantic Ridge, Lucky Strike vent field) are populated with dense communities of dual symbioses harboring vent mussel Bathymodiolus azoricus, some of which are covered by white filamentous mats belonging to sulfur-oxidizing bacteria. Mussels were collected in both the presence and absence of the filamentous bacteria. Thalassobaculum salexigens sp nov., a new member of the family Rhodospirillaceae from the NW Mediterranean Sea, and emended description of the genus Thalassobaculum ArchiMer

A novel Gram-negative bacteria, named CZ41_10a(T), was isolated from coastal surface waters of the north-western Mediterranean Sea. Cells were motile, pleomorphic rods, 1.6 mu m long and 0.7 mu m wide and formed cream colonies on marine agar medium. The G+C content of the genomic DNA was 65 mol%. Phylogenetic analysis of 16S rRNA gene sequences placed the new isolate in the genus Thalassobaculum, a member of the family Rhodospirillaceae, class Alphaproteobacteria. To explore the capability of basaltic glass to support the growth of chemosynthetic microorganisms, complementary in situ and in vitro colonization experiments were performed. Recent studies indicate that ammonia is an important electron donor for the oxidation of fixed nitrogen, both in the marine water column and sediments. This process, known as anammox, has so far only been observed in a large range of temperature habitats. The present study investigated the role of anammox in hydrothermal settings. Relative abundance and diversity of bacterial methanotrophs at the oxic-anoxic interface of the Congo deep-sea fan ArchiMer

The presently active region of the Congo deep-sea fan (around 330 000 km2), called the terminal lobes or lobe complex, covers an area of 2500 km2 at 4700–5100 m water depth and 750–800 km offshore. It is a unique sedimentary area in the world ocean fed by a submarine canyon and a channel-levee system which presently deliver large amounts of organic carbon originating from the Congo River by turbidity currents. This particularity is due to the deep incision of the shelf by the Congo canyon, up to 30 km into the estuary, which funnels the Congo River sediments into the deep-sea. Marinitoga hydrogenitolerans sp nov., a novel member of the order Thermotogales isolated from a black smoker chimney on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge ArchiMer

A novel, thermophilic, anaerobic bacterium that is able to tolerate hydrogen was isolated from a deep-sea hydrothermal chimney collected at the Rainbow field on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. Cells were rod-shaped and surrounded by a sheath-like outer structure (toga); they were weakly motile by means of a polar flagellum. They appeared singly, in pairs or in short chains. They grew at 35-65 degrees C (optimum 60 degrees C), pH 4.5-8.5 (optimum pH 6.0) and 10-65 g sea salts l(-1) (optimum 30-40 g l(-1)). Export of deep-sea hydrothermal particles, indigenous thermophilic microorganisms and larvae to the surrounding Ocean ArchiMer

To assess the production and the export of particulate and biological material in deep-sea hydrothermal vents, four moorings with sediment traps and current meters were deployed for 24 days in the Azores Triple Junction (ATJ) region. They were deployed along an axis starting at the base of a hydrothermal vent chimney and ending 1000 m away. The particles sampled at the base of the chimney were characterized by high concentrations in total sulfur (16%) and iron (4%). The particle composition changed drastically with distance from the vent: the sulfur concentration decreased with an increase in clay components. Melitea salexigens gen. nov., sp nov., a gammaproteobacterium from the Mediterranean Sea ArchiMer

A novel aerobic, Gram-negative bacterial strain, designated 51X/A01/131(T) T, was isolated from waters in the coastal north-western Mediterranean Sea. The cells were motile, straight rods, 1.6 mu m long and 0.5 pm wide, and formed cream colonies on marine 2216 agar. The G+C content of the genomic DNA was 57 mol %. Phylogenetic analysis of the 16S rRNA gene sequence placed the strain in the class Gammaproteobacteria. On the basis of the 16S rRNA gene sequence comparisons and physiological and biochemical characteristics, strain 51X/A01/13 1 T represents a novel genus and species, for which the name Melitea salexigens gen. nov., sp. nov. is proposed. A novel strictly anaerobic, thermophilic, sulfur-reducing bacterium, designated PH1209(T), was isolated from an East Pacific Rise hydrothermal vent (13 degrees N) sample and studied using a polyphasic taxonomic approach. Cells were Gram-negative, motile rods (approx. 1.60x0.40 mu m) with a single polar flagellum. Strain PH1209(T) grew at temperatures between 33 and 65 degrees C (optimum 60 degrees C), from pH 5.0 to 8.0 (optimum 6.0-6.5), and between 2 and 4% (w/v) NaCl (optimum 3%). A thermophilic, anaerobic, chemo-organotrophic sulfur-reducing bacterium, designated MV1075(T), was isolated from a deep-sea hydrothermal chimney sample collected on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. Cells were rod-shaped with a sheath-like outer structure, motile with polar flagella and stained Gramnegative. They appeared singly, in pairs or in short chains. In the Guaymas Basin, the presence at a few tens of kilometers of cold seeps and hydrothermal vents coupled with comparable sedimentary settings and depths offer a unique opportunity to assess and compare the microbial community composition of these deep-sea ecosystems. The microbial diversity in sediments from three cold seep and two hydrothermal vent assemblages were investigated using high-throughput 16S rRNA-sequencing. In this preliminary study, we investigate living (stained) foraminifera from the Sea of Marmara. We focus on the faunal composition and geochemical signatures (trace elements, carbon and oxygen stable isotopes) in foraminiferal tests at two deep-sea sites (329 and ~1240 m depth respectively). Documented by ROV observations and sampling, both study areas are heterogeneous (including bacterial mats and carbonate concretions), proximal to cold seeps and consist of dysoxic bottom water (O2<20 µmol/L). The prevailing dysoxia at both study areas restricts foraminiferal diversity to very low values (S<9, H’<0.97). Caloranaerobacter azorensis gen. nov., sp nov., an anaerobic thermophilic bacterium isolated from a deep-sea hydrothermal vent ArchiMer

A thermophilic, anaerobic, chemo-organotrophic bacterium, designated MV1087(T), was isolated from a deep-sea hydrothermal chimney sample collected from the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. The cells were straight, motile and stained Gram-negative. Growth was observed from 45 to 65 degreesC, with an optimum around 65 degreesC. No growth was observed at 40 or 70 degreesC. Growth was observed from pH 5.5 to 9.0 and the optimum pH was around 7. The salinity range for growth was 10-100 g sea salt l(-1) (corresponding to 6.5-65 g NaCl l(-1)) with an optimum at 30 g sea salt l(-1) (20 g NaCl l(-1)).
